Months of negotiations entered a new phase yesterday, after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was hosted to a dinner by the leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, Giorgia Meloni, also leader of the national-conservative Italian Brotherhood party.
Meloni, who is on a tour of Europe ahead of this week’s EU summit, also met with David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, and Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs.
Meloni also held talks with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša. From these meetings, it appears that the ECR intends to play a leading role in the party group that PM Orban intends to form with Matteo Salvini and Morawiecki in the European Parliament.
If Fidesz were to apply to become a member of the ECR group, Meloni said they would be “happy to consider the application together with the rest of the group in the party family “. For the time being, Orbán’s party “has not asked to join the ECR”, but “we are obviously interested in expanding the family”, he added.
